he ordered schools for children set up in every town of the land
He studied under Rabbi Yochanan. His adviser in matters of religion was Rabbi Ami, who led the academy of Tiberias after Rabbi Elazar; the same Ami objected to the number of fasts the patriarch appointed.
The chief event of his years was the coming of Diocletian: it is told how he was summoned in haste to the emperor at Caesarea Philippi and rode there from Tiberias. He died about 320; he was probably buried at Sepphoris.
