Rav Yehuda Zev Segal—the Manchester Rosh Yeshiva הרב יהודה זאב סגל

The yeshiva in Manchester was founded by his father in 5671; the son took it over and led it for nearly half a century. English Jewry was then few and scattered, and this yeshiva became its house of study.

He took the rule of the Chofetz Chaim—to watch one's speech—and made of it a daily labour: a short passage of the laws of speech every day, all together, on a common schedule. The custom spread far beyond England and holds to this day.

What is told of him is mostly not his learning but his conduct: how he kept silent where another would have answered; how he let no one speak ill of a man in his presence; how he walked through the yeshiva every evening. He died in 5753.
