the first chasidic rebbe of Hungary; founder of the Kalov court
He was born in Hungary into a poor family; it is told that as a boy he herded geese. Rabbi Leib Sarah's took him to study under Rabbi Shmelke in Nikolsburg, then he was with Rabbi Elimelech in Lizhensk—and returned to Hungary a chasid, the first.
Kalov. From 1781 rabbi of Nagykálló (Kalov), and there the court: the first chasidic court in Hungary, half a century before Sanz and Satmar.
The song. He took Hungarian shepherds' tunes and gave them Jewish words. "The rooster is crowing"—of a bird that waits for dawn and a people that waits for return—is sung in the Hungarian courts and far beyond them, in Hungarian and Yiddish together. The Kalov court is known first of all by it.
He died on 7 Adar 1821.
