Joseph ibn Naghrela יוסף אבן נגרלה

The son of Shmuel haNagid, he was given the education a father would give the heir to his work: Talmud, Arabic letters, administration. On his father's death in 1056 he took his place beside Badis, the emir of Granada.
Contemporaries, Jewish and Muslim alike, agree that he was the less careful man: he kept a court, placed his own people in office, and drew envy openly. How just the accusations of conspiring against the emir may be cannot be judged: they were preserved by the men who killed him.
On 30 December 1066 a mob broke into the palace. Joseph was killed, his body crucified on the city gate, and the Jewish quarter was then attacked. The sources give no year for his birth; only the year of his death is known—and that is what the timeline shows.
