Zvulun זבולון

Leah's sixth son; she gave the name: "now will my husband dwell with me." Jacob's blessing is short and exact: "Zebulun shall dwell at the haven of the sea, and he shall be for a haven of ships." His portion reached the sea, and the tribe lived by trade.

Moses placed him before his elder brother: "rejoice, Zebulun, in your going out, and Issachar, in your tents." The sages explain the order: the one who supports the student is named first, because without him there would be no study. Hence "the compact of Issachar and Zebulun"—still signed today between a man of business and a man of learning.

From the tribe of Zebulun came the judge Elon the Zebulunite, who judged Israel ten years; Deborah's song remembers Zebulun among those who "jeoparded their lives unto the death."
