Agrippa's son was sixteen when his father died, and Claudius judged him too young for a kingdom. Judea went back to the procurators, and he was given first Chalcis, then lands in the north—the Bashan, the Golan, later part of the Galilee with Tiberias.

A right worse than a kingdom. He was nonetheless left with oversight of the Temple and the right to appoint the high priest. That is why the last years of the Second Temple look as they do: the high priesthood ceased to be a service and became an office granted and withdrawn by a man who did not live in Jerusalem. The sages have little good to say of those high priests, and one can see why.

Before the revolt. In the year 66 he spoke before the people in Jerusalem: he counted over the nations Rome had subdued and asked how Judea was stronger than they. He was driven off. He then fought on the Roman side and was wounded at Gamla; after the destruction Vespasian gave him new estates in the north, and there he lived into old age. He is the last of the house of Herod—the house ended together with the Temple it had fed on.
