Amemar אמימר

restorer of Nehardea, judge of Rav Ashi's generation

Amemar was an Amora of the sixth generation, judge and head of restored Nehardea; he issued rulings for Mechoza as well. In the Talmud he is constant in the trio "Amemar, Mar Zutra and Rav Ashi sat together" (e.g. Berakhot 44a, Ketubot 61a)—the three authorities of the last generation at one table, whose table-rulings passed into halakhah.

His too is the bold rule about the sage: "a sage is greater than a prophet" (Bava Batra 12a)—prophecy has ended, but wisdom judges every day. His son Rav Mar studied under Rav Ashi: the net of generations closed upon the compilers of the Talmud.

The sources give no years of life; the window of activity is set by generation, following Aharon Hyman's Toldot Tannaim ve-Amoraim.
