The Ohev Yisrael—the Apter Rov רבי אברהם יהושע העשיל מאפטא
the elder of the tzaddikim, laid to rest beside the Besht
His road ran Kolbuszowa, then from 1800 Apt (Opatów), which gave him his name, then Iași, and his last years Medzhibozh, the Besht's town. There he is buried, beside the Baal Shem Tov.
The Ohev Yisrael—teachings on the weekly portions—was published by his grandsons. Intercession was his service: where courts quarrelled, he was called. His namesake and descendant, named in his honour, is the philosopher Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, who stands on this ribbon in the twentieth century; do not confuse the two.
