Brisk בריסק
The town that gave its name to the way of learning Talmud still used in yeshivot today.
The rabbi of Brisk was Rabbi Yehoshua Leib Diskin, until he left for the Land of Israel; after him Rabbi Yosef Dov Soloveitchik, the Beis HaLevi, and after him his son Rabbi Chaim. With Rabbi Chaim there took shape the way of analysis called Brisker: not to ask "what is done" but "what kind of thing is this"—and to separate concepts where a dispute looks like a dispute about words.
From here the method spread through the Lithuanian yeshivot, and holds in them still.
