He led Volozhin together with the Netziv, and they led differently: the Netziv by breadth and plain sense, Rabbi Yosef Dov by sharpness of analysis. The question of who should head the yeshiva was judged by four Lithuanian rabbis, Rabbi Yitzchak Elchanan Spektor among them; they ruled for the Netziv, and Rabbi Yosef Dov left, despite requests that he return. The breach later healed: his son Chaim married the Netziv's granddaughter.

Then came Slutsk, which he left of his own accord rather than yield to the influence of one maskil, and about four years in Warsaw—with no position and in want. Brisk called him when Rabbi Yehoshua Leib Diskin departed for the Land of Israel. There he remained until his death, and there his son Chaim carried to its end what in the father was a beginning: the Brisker way of analysing the Talmud—not "what should be done" but "what kind of thing is this".
