Rabbi Chaim Yisrael Morgensztern of Pilov רבי חיים ישראל מורגנשטרן מפילוב
the third rebbe of Kotzk; among the first chasidic masters to call openly for settling in Erets Yisrael
He was born in Kotzk in 1840, the son of Rabbi David and grandson of the Kotzker. He took the court after his father's death in 1873, and in 1888 moved to Pilov, by which he is named.
The Shalom Yerushalayim is his book on settling Erets Yisrael: he argued the settlement there as a matter that does not wait. For the buying of land he founded a society, gathering a thousand subscribers. Among the chasidic courts of that time this stood apart.
He died on 12 Sivan. The year is given two ways—1905 and 1906—and each reading holds two witnesses. His son Rabbi Yitzchak Zelig, rabbi of Sokolow Podlaski, took the court.
