Lizhensk ליז'נסק
A town in Galicia where Rebbe Elimelech kept the court from which all Polish and Galician Chassidism came.
Rebbe Elimelech settled here around 1775, and for ten-odd years Lizhensk was to Poland what Mezritch had been to all Chassidism: here came to learn those who later founded courts—the Seer of Lublin, the Maggid of Kozhnitz, Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Rimanov, Rabbi Naftali of Ropshitz. Noam Elimelech, the Rebbe's book, was written here.
After his death in 1787 the town remained a place of pilgrimage: people come to his grave on the yahrzeit, 21 Adar, in their tens of thousands.
The Jewish community of Lizhensk perished in 1942. The ohel over the Rebbe's grave has been rebuilt, and in Adar the town fills with Chassidim once more.
