"Moses received the Torah at Sinai and handed it on to Joshua, Joshua to the elders…"—with this line the tractate begins, and the chain runs on to the sages of the Mishnah, each name followed by what he said. Not one law: only teachings, each a line or two.

From here comes almost everything quoted from the Talmud by people who never open the Talmud: "if I am not for myself, who is for me", "do not judge your fellow until you stand in his place", "it is not for you to finish the work, nor are you free to desist from it". There is no Gemara; in its place a separate midrash was written, Avot de-Rabbi Natan. The chapters are read on the Sabbaths between Passover and Rosh Hashanah.

Order: Nezikin. There is no Gemara in either Talmud—the tractate remained mishnah.
