Beitzah ביצה

The tractate is named for its first words—"an egg laid on a festival": the dispute of the schools of Shammai and Hillel over whether it may be eaten that same day. Behind the small question stands a large one: a festival is not the Sabbath, food may be prepared on it, and a line must be drawn where "needed for food" ends.

From this come the laws of carrying fire, of slaughtering, of what may be prepared in advance, and of the eruv tavshilin that joins a festival to the Sabbath that follows it. The tractate's other name is Yom Tov.

Order: Moed. There is Gemara in both the Babylonian and the Jerusalem Talmud.
