The order of time: the Sabbath, the festivals, the fasts and everything that marks out the Jewish year.
Twelve tractates, and the first two—Shabbat and Eruvin—are held to be the hardest in the Talmud. They work through the thirty-nine categories of labour forbidden on the Sabbath, and the ways of joining domains so as to carry within them.
Then comes the year: Pesachim—the paschal offering and leaven; Yoma—the High Priest's service on the Day of Atonement; Sukkah, Beitzah, Rosh Hashanah, Taanit, Megillah, Moed Katan—the intermediate days, and Chagigah—the pilgrimage to the Temple. Shekalim, on the Temple half-shekel, has no Babylonian Gemara, and in printed editions the Jerusalem Gemara stands in its place: the only case of its kind.
The order has 12 tractates: Shabbat, Eruvin, Pesachim, Shekalim, Yoma, Sukkah, Beitzah, Rosh Hashanah, Taanit, Megillah, Moed Katan, Chagigah.
