Yoma יומא

a tractate of the order of Moed

The name means simply "the Day"—that one. For seven days the high priest was kept apart from his house and taught the order of the service; on the night before Yom Kippur he was not allowed to sleep. The tractate leads him through the whole day: the immersions, the changes of vestments, the lots over the two goats, the incense in the Holy of Holies, the confession.

The last chapter turns from the Temple to the person: the fast, the sick who are fed, and above all that for sins between a person and God the Day of Atonement atones, while for sins between a person and his fellow it does not atone until the fellow is appeased. With this the tractate ends—with Rabbi Akiva's words about the hope of Israel.

Order: Moed. There is Gemara in both the Babylonian and the Jerusalem Talmud.
