Shekalim שקלים

On the first of Adar the shekels were announced, and every adult gave half a shekel—the rich no more, the poor no less. With that money the communal offerings were bought, the building repaired, the water and the guards paid for. The tractate is a rare ancient picture of how a treasury was run.

Here the officers of the Temple are named, and the order by which whoever handled the money could not be suspected: the one who entered the chamber wore no hemmed garment and no cuffed shoe, "for a man must be clear before people as he is clear before the Almighty".

Order: Moed. There is Gemara only in the Jerusalem Talmud.
