Makhshirin מכשירין

Dry grain does not receive impurity. But let it be wetted by one of seven liquids—water, dew, wine, oil, blood, milk, honey—and it becomes susceptible. Hence the name: "those that make fit"—fit for impurity.

The most curious thing in the tractate is the role of intention. If water fell on produce against the owner's will, it remains incapable of impurity; if he wanted it wetted, it becomes capable. A law about inanimate things turns out to depend on what was in a person's mind.

Order: Tohorot. There is no Gemara in either Talmud—the tractate remained mishnah.
