Rabbi Mordechai Shlomo Friedman of Boyan רבי מרדכי שלמה פרידמן מבויאן

the second rebbe of Boyan; the first Ruzhin rebbe in America

After the death of Rabbi Yitzchak of Boyan in 1917 the house of Boyan was divided among the sons: the elder ones stayed in Europe, and he, the youngest, left for New York in 1927.

America. He was the first rebbe of the house of Ruzhin across the ocean. He kept court on the East Side, later in Brooklyn, in the Ruzhin manner—reserved, without wonders and without crowds. His brothers and their courts perished in the Shoah; of the Boyan rebbes he alone remained.

Jerusalem. In his lifetime the Boyan chasidim of Jerusalem already gathered round their own synagogue; after his death in 1971 the court was re-established there, and today Boyan is a Jerusalem court.
