Rabban Gamaliel VI—the last patriarch רבן גמליאל השישי

with him the patriarchate in the Land of Israel came to an end

The date of the decree differs by three days: 17 or 20 October 415. By the Theodosian Code the edict of 426 turned the patriarchal tax, which the communities of the dispersion sent to the Land of Israel, into an imperial one. So ended an office that had run from Hillel the Elder for four hundred years.

One separate testimony to him comes from another world: the Roman medical writer Marcellus set down a remedy for disease of the spleen "lately proved by tested experiments by the patriarch Gamaliel".
