the amora put out of the study house for a question—and brought back for an answer
The law of the found fledgling: within fifty cubits of the dovecote it belongs to the owner, beyond—to the finder. Rabbi Yirmeya asked: and if one foot is inside the fifty and one outside? For that question he was put out of the study house—the Gemara says it plainly. Some time later the sages stuck fast in another problem; he sent the answer in through the door—and was brought back.
His questions are not mockery but method: a law with an exact boundary must be shown the case standing on the boundary with both feet. Having settled in the Land of Israel he spoke sharply of his old home—"foolish Babylonians, dwellers in a dark land"—and became a pillar of the Yerushalmi: "they said in the West" often means "Rabbi Yirmeya said".
