Rabbi Yochanan haSandlar רבי יוחנן הסנדלר

The byname "haSandlar" means sandal-maker: as Rabbi Yose was a tanner and Hillel a woodcutter, he lived by his craft and learned. A native of Alexandria in Egypt, he went up to the Land of Israel for the Torah of Rabbi Akiva. When the master was imprisoned, Rabbi Yochanan—so the Yerushalmi tells—reached him disguised as a peddler crying his wares, and carried out a ruling on a case of chalitzah (Yerushalmi Yevamot 12:5).

In Pirkei Avot, in his name: "Every assembly that is for the sake of Heaven will endure, and one not for the sake of Heaven will not endure" (Avot 4:11).

The sources give no years of life; the window of activity is set by generation, following Aharon Hyman's Toldot Tannaim ve-Amoraim.
