A Provençal by birth. In 1306 French Jewry ceased to be—all were expelled—and he found himself in Toledo, with the Rosh, Rabbeinu Asher. There he was trained.
Two codes. Toldot Adam veChava is divided by the names of the first human beings: the "Adam" part covers the laws touching a person before marriage, from circumcision to prayer; the "Chava" part covers betrothal, marriage and the household. Sefer Meisharim, begun in 5090 and written in four years, is on money and property law.
To arrange the law in that order—not by the tractates of the Talmud but by a human life—was new then. Two centuries later Rabbi Yosef Karo, compiling the Beit Yosef, argues with him constantly: one argues with those who cannot be passed over.
