Rabbi Shlomo Kluger was born in 5545 (1785) at Komarow. By the received account his father, Rabbi Yehuda Aharon, died at Zamosc when the boy was about thirteen, and the Maggid of Dubno, then living out his last years there, took the orphan into his house; the account has no written source, and we give it as an account. Then came Rawa, Kulikov, Jozefow, Brzezany and at last Brody: there he was dayan and preacher for more than fifty years. He wrote about a hundred and sixty volumes, of which only a part has been printed.
His loudest answer came in 1859, against machine-made matzah: he argued that machine dough fails the requirement of lishmah and can sour inside the mechanism. The dispute over machine matzah is alive to this day, and both sides begin from his page.
The year of birth is given both as 1785 and 1786; we set the first and name the second.
