Rabbi Todros ha-Levi Abulafia רבי טודרוס בן יוסף הלוי אבולעפיה

head of the Jews of Castile and the first kabbalist of the talmudic aggadah

Nephew of the Ramah, Rabbi Meir ha-Levi Abulafia. He accompanied the kings of Castile on their journey to France in 1275; once he was thrown into prison under threat of death and released.

The kabbalistic circle of Toledo rested on him: it was to him that Moses de Leon dedicated Shekel ha-Kodesh in 1292.

The years are disputed more sharply than for anyone else in this batch. The Jewish Encyclopedia gives birth in 1234 and death "after 1304" at Seville; other works give 1225 and about 1285 at Toledo; others again 1220 and 1298. We take the encyclopedia's reading and name the rest.
