the first to contradict the Mishneh Torah—in Maimonides' own lifetime
So began the first Maimonidean controversy—about 4960 (1200), in the lifetime of the man disputed about. From the later turns of the quarrel, in the 1230s, he deliberately held aloof.
Yad Ramah is his novellae on the Talmud; few tractates survive, chiefly Sanhedrin and Bava Batra, and on them Rabbi Yaakov ben Asher leaned in compiling the Turim. Masoret Seyag la-Torah is a manual for the writing of a scroll: which word is spelled how, where full and where defective. That code became the norm for scribes, and scrolls are written by it still.
