Gustav Mahler

The baptism did not save him for a day. The Viennese antisemitic press hounded him for all ten years, from 1897 to 1907, and in 1907 drove him out of the opera. He was buried at Grinzing on 22 May 1911 beside his daughter Maria, with instructions that the stone bear only his name: "any who come looking for me will know who I was, and the rest do not need to know."

The famous "I am thrice homeless: a Bohemian among Austrians, an Austrian among Germans and a Jew throughout the world" comes down only through Alma Mahler's memoirs. It must be printed that way and no other: as reported by Alma, not as words he wrote.
