Rav Yechezkel Levenstein רב יחזקאל לוינשטיין

He studied in Kelm, in the school of Rabbi Simcha Zissel, and in Radin under the Chafetz Chaim. In Mir he became assistant to the mashgiach Rabbi Yerucham Levovitz, and after his death in 1936 took his place, and held it for nearly forty years. The mashgiach in a Lithuanian yeshiva is not a supervisor: he is the one answerable for what kind of man leaves the yeshiva.

When the war began, the Mir yeshiva—the only one to do so whole—went by way of Vilna and Kobe to Shanghai, and he led it there for five years: three hundred young men in a foreign city, without families, without news from home. His talks of those years—on how to stand when the world is collapsing—are why Mir came out of the war as a yeshiva and not a crowd of refugees.

After the war—Mir in Jerusalem, and from 1954 until his death Ponevezh in Bnei Brak, under Rav Kahaneman. His talks are recorded in the books Or Yechezkel; mussar is still learned from them.
