Rabbi's grandson, who permitted oil prepared by non-Jews
The best known ruling of his court is the permission of gentile oil: Shmuel accepted it at once, Rav after some hesitation.
He was not held equal in learning to his grandfather, and said so himself: in a drought, when his prayer brought no rain, he said aloud what difference there was between Samuel of Ramah and Judah son of Gamaliel.
With Rabbi Yochanan, head of the academy of Tiberias, he kept on good terms, and that concord between patriarch and study house shaped his time. His quarrel with the preacher Jose of Maon was settled by Reish Lakish. The years of the patriarchate are about 230–270; the Jewish Encyclopedia is more cautious and says only "the middle of the third century".
