Rabbi Oshaya prevented him from introducing in Syria a decree on the tithe of field produce. In his time, by present research, the very word Sanhedrin fell out of use: the rulings went out from the study house.
His years are uncertain, and the Jewish Encyclopedia says so plainly: Graetz places him in the last third of the third century, Halevy makes him a contemporary of Oshaya. The window is set by the first reading.
