he left the Seer to seek truth without wonders
His name was his teacher's name—Yaakov Yitzchak; so as not to speak the teacher's name, the student was called simply "the Jew", ha-Yehudi. A byname of humility became the name of a school.
When the Seer and other tzaddikim sought by Kabbalah to hasten the end of the Napoleonic wars and press the redemption near, the Yid refused his part: it is not ours to hasten. He drew the best away to Peshischa—Simcha Bunim, the future Kotzker—and died in 1813, two years before the teacher with whom he was never wholly reconciled.
