the fifth rebbe of Karlin-Stolin; he became rebbe at four years old
The sources give his birth year as 1868 or 1869; we set the second.
A rebbe of four. His father, Rabbi Asher II, died in 1873, and the Stolin chasidim, finding no other heir in the direct line, recognised the four-year-old son as rebbe. The case was rare and much discussed; hence the name that stayed with him as a grown man.
The court. He grew up and led the house in earnest: the Stolin chasidim spread through Polesia, Lithuania and further, and he travelled the communities himself. The Karlin prayer aloud remained under him.
He went to Germany for treatment and died in Homburg on 2 Tishrei 1921. His sons spread the Stolin branches through the townlets, and almost all perished in the Shoah; the house gathered anew in the Land of Israel and in America.
