grandson of the Yismach Moshe; rabbi of Sighet, founder of the Sighet court
The son of Rabbi Elazar Nisan, rabbi of Drohobych, and grandson of the Yismach Moshe—at his grandfather’s in Ujhel he grew up and studied.
Rabbinates. He was rabbi in Stropkov, then in Ujhel in his grandfather’s place, in Gorlice, in Drohobych; in 1858 he accepted Sighet, the chief town of Maramureș, and stayed there until his death. Under him Sighet became chasidic: the rabbi of the town was also the rebbe.
Books. The Yitav Lev—talks on the weekly portions; the Yitav Panim—on the festivals. Both in the grandfather’s spirit: Torah for the plain chasid, without kabbalistic subtleties.
He died on 6 Elul 5643 (1883); the court was taken by his son, Rabbi Chananya Yom Tov Lipa.
