the rabbi of Izmir who taught Shabbetai Tzvi—and banned him
Born, probably, at Skopje; by way of Salonika he came to Izmir—a city growing before one's eyes from port into a capital of trade—and became its first builder: the community's statutes, the order of levies, the court. His book is called Rosh Yosef, on the Arba'ah Turim.
The ban on Shabbetai Tzvi—about 1651—was the act of the rabbinic college under his lead; the exact year drifts, and we say so. The teacher did not live three years short of the great madness of 1665–66. The chronicler David Conforte saw him near a hundred.
