The Griz—Rabbi Yitzchok Zev Soloveitchik, the Brisker Rov רבי יצחק זאב הלוי סולובייצ'יק

he carried Brisk to Jerusalem, losing half his house on the way

Of his exactness the same thing is told from different sides: he would not quote from memory—only with the book open. His strictness became proverbial, and the "Brisker chumra" is a notion of its own.

In 1941, as the Germans advanced on Brest, he left with some of his children through Vilna and reached the Land of Israel; his wife and the other children stayed behind and were murdered near Brest. He held the haredi world back from Israeli politics. His teaching—Chiddushei ha-Griz—was carried on by his sons, and the Brisker yeshivot of Jerusalem stand to this day. The year of birth is given both as 1886 and 1887; we set the first.
