The Imrei Sofer—Rabbi Yochanan Sofer of Erlau רבי יוחנן סופר מערלוי—אמרי סופר
he set up the house of Erlau anew in Jerusalem; the fifth link from the Chatam Sofer
Son of Rabbi Moshe Sofer, grandson of Rabbi Shimon, the fifth link from the Chatam Sofer. He was born on 13 Tevet in Eger; the Hebrew year is given two ways—5683 and 5684—and both fall in 1923.
He survived the war in labour camps and in a Budapest refuge, while his father, his mother and four sisters perished. In 1946 he led the Chatam Sofer yeshiva in Budapest together with his brother, and in the autumn of 1950 he went up to Erets Yisrael.
In 1953 he set up in the Katamon quarter of Jerusalem the Ohel Shimon yeshiva—named for his grandfather—and led it more than sixty years; for about forty years he sat on the Council of Torah Sages. His books are the Imrei Sofer, the Apiryon Chasanim and the Yomin d'Chanuka. He died on 13 Adar I 2016 in Jerusalem.
