Mar bar Rav Ashi מר בר רב אשי

Mar bar Rav Ashi was the son and continuator of Rav Ashi and head of the academy at Sura in the last generation of Amoraim. He was also called Tavyomi.

In the Talmud he stands on the boundary: he disputes with the last Amoraim, and the rule of the later generations holds that against his fellows the law follows him—a sign that the redaction was nearing its end and his word was the closing one.

Of him is told an incident showing how judges regarded their own power: he heard a case in which he had an interest, explaining that he judged without partiality since he would grant himself no indulgence either (Bava Batra 12b); the Talmud records the objection to this as well.

The composition of the Babylonian Talmud would close soon after him—in 4260, with Ravina; then begins the age of the Savoraim, who no longer add but correct and complete.
