Rabbi Mana of Sepphoris רבי מנא
head of the academy of Sepphoris in the last generation
The Jerusalem Talmud preserves a domestic scene: at the coming of a Roman official he gives the bakers directions how to bake the bread. By such passages one sees what the head of a community actually did.
His chief opponent in argument is Jose bar Abin. The sources give no years of birth or death; the window is set by the statement that he was active about 380. His name is written both Mana and Mani—it is one man.
