Ravina I רבינא הראשון

Rav Ashi's fellow in the work on the Talmud

He studied under Rava, son of Joseph bar Hama. In his youth Rava called him and Hama bar Bisa dardekei—children (Bava Batra 16b). He left Mahoza in Rava's lifetime and worked at Sura, in Mata Mehasya, under Ashi.

He must be distinguished from Ravina II, son of Huna, with whose death about the year 4260 the age of the amoraim ends; that one stands separately in this base. Ravina I died about 420, seven years before Rav Ashi.
