Seder Olama timeline of Jewish history

Seder Olam Zuta סדר עולם זוטא

A brief chronicle of the exilarchs: fifty generations from Adam and the line of the resh galuta in Babylonia. The younger sister of Seder Olam Rabbah—and of a wholly different weight.

"Zuta" means "lesser"—in bulk and in standing. Seder Olam Rabbah counts the years of the world and underlies the Jewish reckoning; Seder Olam Zuta is a short list of generations carried down to the heads of the Babylonian exile, the reshei galuta.

Structure. First fifty generations from Adam, each in a line or two. Then the thing the book is kept for: a roll of the exilarchs with fathers and sons, carried down to Mar Zutra III.

The date is unknown. Some assign the compilation to the eighth or ninth century; others see an early core completed later. The argument is open, and we set no year of composition at all.

What may be expected of the book and what may not. The list of generations from Adam is not taken as history: it is a count by tradition, not testimony. But the account of Mar Zutra II—of a few years of independent Jewish rule at Mahoza under King Kavad, and of the execution on the bridge—is taken seriously, for a plain reason: it embellishes nothing and resembles nothing else. That account has no other source.

It is worth reading as a roll, not as a chronicle: it answers "who after whom", not "how it was".
