He was born in 1783 in Bielitz, in Silesia. He studied under the Chozeh of Lublin and the Maggid of Kozhnitz; Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Rimanov became his chief teacher.
He was rabbi of Karlsburg, Alba Iulia, in Transylvania. His book is the Mareh Yechezkel, responsa.
He died in the days of Pesach 1845, on 19 or 20 Nisan; the sources differ. His son Rabbi Menachem Mendel became rabbi of Dej and made the town a Chassidic court; hence the house of Dej.
