the second rebbe of Chortkov; one of the leaders of Agudat Yisrael
The son of Rabbi David Moshe of Chortkov, grandson of the Ruzhiner. He took the court after his father’s death in 1903.
Vienna. The First World War drove the Ruzhin courts out of Galicia and Bukovina; he settled in Vienna, and the Chortkov court became a Viennese one. People travelled to him from all over Europe.
Agudat Yisrael. The Ruzhin rebbes kept apart from public movements. Not he: he was among the founders of Agudat Yisrael and opened its first great assembly in Vienna in 1923. He held that before the new age Jewry could not afford to stand divided.
He died in Vienna on 13 Kislev 5694—the civil year is given as 1933 or 1934.
